CNN —The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were revealed last week and – as they so often do – caused quite a stir. Co-written and directed by Triet, “Anatomy of a Fall” is nominated for five Oscars this year in total, including for best original screenplay and best picture. That gives Williams more Academy Award nominations than any other living person. According to the Academy, the late Walt Disney holds the overall record of career nominations, with a grand total of 59. Still, it seemed to be a role destined for Brooks, who received a Tony Award nomination in 2016 for playing the same character in the Broadway revival of the musical.

REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBRUSSELS, Dec 5 (Reuters) - EU countries and lawmakers may have to meet for yet another round of talks to hammer out crucial details of rules for artificial intelligence even if they clinch a deal on Wednesday, French Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Tuesday. There is still a gap between both sides, Barrot said. Barrot cited biometric surveillance and general-purpose AI where the two sides have to work further on the finer details. Further discussions, however, could delay the rollout of landmark rules in Europe that could set the benchmark for other countries.

French economy contracts in Q3, inflation eases further

REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Nov 30 (Reuters) - The French economy contracted by 0.1% in the third quarter of the year, revised data from the statistics office INSEE showed on Thursday, while November inflation eased more than expected. The inflation was down from 4.5% in October, helped by easing price pressure in energy and in the services sector. Food prices rose 7.6% in November, versus 7.8% in October while the increase in energy prices slowed to 3.1% after seeing an increase of 5.2% last month. Month-on-month, prices declined by 0.2% as falling transportation and energy prices offset a month-on-month rise of food prices, especially fresh produce. [1/3] French Foreign Affairs Minister Catherine Colonna and French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu leave following the weekly cabinet meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris, France, November 22, 2023. France, with overseas territories in the Pacific and Indian Ocean and 7,000 troops stationed there, considers itself an Indo-Pacific power. The loss of a major submarine deal with Australia in 2021 forced it rethink its strategy amid ongoing regional tensions with China in the disputed South China Sea. Underscoring those efforts, Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu will host in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia between Dec. 4-8 the South Pacific Defence Ministers Meeting, the first time it has hosted the format since it was created in 2013. While it has diversified its ties across the Pacific, France has also worked on rebuilding its partnership with Australia.

Euro zone inflation tumble pits ECB against markets

Inflation has dropped quickly towards the ECB's 2% target from levels above 10% just a year ago but policymakers have cautioned against excessive optimism. The rapid inflation slowdown puts the euro zone central bank and investors on a collision course as the two appear to see greatly different paths ahead, both for consumer prices and ECB interest rates. "And if the recent trends in inflation and growth continue then 2024 will be the year when the ECB implements a pirouette in monetary policy." "The market is therefore right to start looking at rate cuts for 2024. Some economists argue that modelling current inflation is exceptionally difficult because corporate profits are the main driver, not wages as in normal bouts of rapid inflation.

In a ministerial circular, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne urged ministers and their top staff to deploy the Olvid app on phones and computers, her office told Reuters on Wednesday, confirming French media reports. Messaging apps like Meta's WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal have increasingly become the go-to tool of communication in the inner circles of French politics, and government officials also use the apps when talking to journalists. REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Night-time protests across France over the past few days by ultra-right militants chanting "Islam out of Europe" have been fanned by last week's rioting in Dublin, a French intelligence source and far-right Telegram communications indicate. In messages sent on French far-right Telegram groups, seen by Reuters, videos of the Dublin riots were shared, highlighting what they said was the assailant's Algerian origin and hailing the reaction of the Irish far-right. CALMING TENSIONSOn a visit to Crepol on Monday, government spokesperson Olivier Veran urged calm, saying "we don't respond to violence with violence, we respond with justice. There are about 3,000 violent ultra-right militants identified by the French intelligence services. That number has been stable for the last few years but the national coordination by demonstrators as seen on Saturday is a new phenomenon, the intelligence source said.

A SUV car drives on a street in Paris as Paris City Hall will organise a public vote on the place of SUV cars in the French capital, France, November 20, 2023. After banning rental scooters in September in the wake of a citizen's vote, Paris will hold a local referendum on Feb. 4 about "the place of SUVs in the capital". Since SUVs can be hard to distinguish from other models, City Hall wants to introduce higher parking fees for thermal engine cars weighing over 1.6 tonnes and for electric vehicles over two tonnes. "(The SUV vote) is to tell all those who continue to use their private cars because they're the richest: No! ECB rates to stay unchanged for next few quarters -Villeroy
  + stars: | 2023-11-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - The European Central Bank's interest rates have reached a plateau where they will likely remain for the next few quarters, ECB policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau said on Monday, dismissing rate cut talk as premature. The ECB broke a streak of 10 consecutive hikes last month by holding rates steady, prompting investors to turn their attention to when rate cuts could come. The ECB aims to steer euro zone inflation towards its 2% target by 2025, though Villeroy insisted the number was an average and he was not fixated on hitting 2.0% precisely. Euro zone inflation has fallen quickly in recent months as the economy has slowed, though Villeroy said a recession could be avoided and a "soft landing" seemed more likely. Gap shares soar on Old Navy brand renewal, controlled inventory

Comparable sales at Old Navy rose 1% in the third quarter, the first increase in 10 quarters. "Old Navy gained market share, an encouraging early proof point that work to improve both product assortment and brand messaging" were driving results, Gap Chief Financial Officer Katrina O'Connell said on Thursday following the earnings. Gap's struggles with outdated inventory at its namesake brand and Old Navy had pushed customers to look for newer and fresher styles at rivals like Shein and Amazon.com (AMZN.O). Jefferies analysts said new CEO Richard Dickson's prior experience in reinvigorating brands like Barbie at Mattel (MAT.O) could bring a lift to the Old Navy banner. The apparel maker's executives also alluded to a "longer recovery" time for Banana Republic and Athleta, which has seen "product misfires" and weak "retail execution".
